What Are Baby Cues?

My Little Cues is designed to help parents track the little everyday moments, feeds, sleep, nappies and routines, so baby cues become easier to notice over time. Baby cues are the little signs babies give to show they may be hungry, tired, uncomfortable or ready for comfort. Here is a gentle guide for new parents.

Babies communicate long before they can speak.

They tell us things through little movements, noises, expressions and changes in behaviour. These are often called baby cues.

A baby cue is simply a small signal that may help you understand what your baby needs. It might be a sign that they are hungry. It might show they are getting tired. It might mean they need a cuddle, a nappy change, a break from stimulation, or simply a bit of comfort.

For new parents, these cues can feel confusing at first. One cry can sound like another. One unsettled moment can feel impossible to understand. And when you are tired, it is easy to wonder whether you are missing something.

That is completely normal.

Learning your baby’s cues takes time.

Some common hunger cues may include your baby turning their head, opening their mouth, sucking their hands, becoming restless, or making little noises before crying. Crying can be a later sign of hunger, but every baby is different.

Tired cues can also vary. Some babies yawn. Some stare into the distance. Some become fussy, wriggle, rub their face, or seem harder to settle. Sometimes a baby who seems wide awake may actually be overtired.

Nappy cues may be more obvious, but not always. A baby might become unsettled, pull their legs up, stop feeding comfortably, or simply seem uncomfortable.

There are also cues that your baby wants connection. They may look towards your face, calm when they hear your voice, relax when held, or become more settled with gentle touch.

The tricky part is that baby cues are not always neat or clear. A hungry baby can also be tired. A tired baby can seem hungry. An uncomfortable baby can look unsettled for lots of reasons.

That is why it can help to gently track what is happening through the day.

Not to overanalyse everything.

Not to make parenting feel clinical.

Not to put pressure on yourself.

But to give yourself small clues.

For example, if your baby is unsettled, it may help to know:

When they last fed

How long they slept

When their last nappy change was

Whether they have been awake for a long time

Whether today feels different from yesterday

These little pieces of information can help you respond with more confidence.

Over time, you may start to notice patterns. Maybe your baby usually gets tired after a certain amount of awake time. Maybe they tend to feed more often in the evening. Maybe nappies follow a rough rhythm. Maybe some days are just different, and that is normal too.

My Little Cues is being created to help parents gently notice these everyday patterns.

Because understanding baby cues is not about getting everything right all the time. It is about learning your baby slowly, with patience, kindness and support.

You will not always know exactly what your baby needs straight away. No parent does. But every day, you are learning each other.

And those little cues can become a little easier to understand.

Gentle note:

If you are ever worried about your baby’s feeding, nappies, temperature, breathing, rash, behaviour, or general wellbeing, always speak to your midwife, health visitor, GP, or appropriate medical professional.
